Peep Sight for Bows: Installation Tips from the Pros at 60X

Your 60X custom strings are stretched, twisted, and manufactured through precise processes and tolerances that allow you to enjoy archery practice sessions or hunting activities without fear of anything moving. Because of our work, your bowstring is perfect and you'll want to keep it that way.

Even with these tight bow string tolerances, you still need to take care when installing a peep sight. Here are some tips to help you understand what a peep sight is, as well as the installation process to keep your strings and peep sights perfect.

Peep Tags and Locators

A peep sight on an archery bow is a small metal hole installed in your bow string. You use this in conjunction with the bow sight to zero in on your target. The "peep tag" that we install represents the center of your bundle, and can also be used as a "locator" for where your sight should go.

After your bow string is installed, leave the peep out and the tag in for a few shots. Your bow string was relaxed in the package and needs a few shots to get it back up to working tension. These few shots also allow the string to set around the bends and grooves of the system. Don't skip this step! It's important for proper placement of your bow's peep sight.

Placement

During your early shots, move the peep tag (while the bow is relaxed in a press) up or down to get the peep height right for you. You don't want to put a peep in where a locator is already an inch too high or low. After you get the tag close to where you want your sight, now you can focus on installing your peep sight.

As you're micro-adjusting the peep height, only do it when the bow string is relaxed in a press. Our materials are very strong, but they are also synthetic and will last much longer if taken care of properly. Sliding your bow's peep sights with a string that isn't relaxed may actually void our warranties.

Even if the peep is installed, leave the tag in for a little while until you're sure that everything is working well. Professionals who know what a peep sight is and how to install it utilize the tag to remove or change peeps without losing the center of the bundle. When everything is all set, you can take it out for good.

How to Tie in Peep Sights

There are many ways to tie in peep sights after installing, but we like to keep it simple. It's easier to experiment with different size peep sights on your bow or even different anchor points/release aids that will require a change in peep height. If the peep is tied in with numerous knots and wraps, it may take a while to undo. Something simple like #4 Nylon served in with 15 wraps top and bottom will sufficiently secure your peep.

Make sure your top and bottom knots are equidistant to the peep or it may want to wiggle a little. Now shoot the bow a couple of times and check your alignment. If you need to adjust your bow's peep sight to align it, add a half twist to the bottom loop until it's pointed straight towards you or straight away (you can reverse the peep if this is the case).

Tips for Tying in Peep Sights

You can now secure the center groove with surgeon knots and nylon filament. You want your peeps secure, but they won't require lots of knots and wraps when installing peep sights. The materials under the knots may fray if heavy manipulation has been used to tie in a knot, so keep this in mind when you or the technician is setting the peep sight on your bow. Take a few extra minutes to make sure it's located and installed properly to ensure an enjoyable archery experience and longer-lasting bow strings.
